Hurricane Season is Here! You Know What That Means (Or Do You)?

As I'm sure you've heard, hurricane season is upon us and I hope everyone is making your initial preparation.

Luckily, it's been some time since we've experienced a direct hit from a serious storm in my area. I suspect most people still understand that being prepared for a major disaster or emergency could be the key to surviving the event for you and your loved ones. Even the simplest preparations can make the difference of diverting a tradegy.

What some may not realize is that preparation for a disaster, like a hurricane, can also speed up the time it takes to get your life back to normal. It may seem obvious, but it is a point many people do not clearly understand. Investing your time and resources now increases your resiliency. This investment not only increases your ability to survive a storm, but how quickly you bounce back from a storm.

Most people focus on the immediate impact, and rightly so, as the deadly threat of a major storm is nothing to ignore; but, few think about what happens after the storm passes.

  • Will your house be livable and what will you do if it's not?
  • How about your job? Will the business still be there? If not, what will you do without income for days or weeks?
  • What if your children's schools are not open? How will that effect your returning to a regular schedule?
  • Electric? Medical? Cell and phone service? Internet? What will it mean to you, if any of these infrastructures are not working?
These are questions that you should be including in your preparations. The answers aren't going to be easy. We assume everything will be as we left it, when we evacuate from a storm. That is rarely the case, if the storm's fury is felt in the area.

Another reason these are difficult questions is because the answers, to these and other post-event questions, typically lies outside of you, the individual. Know where to find your emergency relief services, such as Red Cross and your local Emergency Operations Center. Keep your important records on you, preferably as a hard copy of the original as well as a digital copy on a thumb drive. Know how to get in touch with your insurance companies. Have a talk with family and friends outside of the area to identify potential places to stay in case the worst happens. Try to keep an amount of emergency funds on hand just in case.

The answer will require you to rely on others for help and assistance.

These are only suggestions to point you in the right direction. Every plan will be tailored to the individual. The most important thing to do at this moment is talk to loved ones and neighbors. Identify your weak links in your preparations. Begin to gather your resources.

------------------------------

The best place to start any preparations is with your local Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Nearly every county has one of these governmental centers in charge of managing large scale emergency crisis. Their websites tend to have an invaluable trove of information, focused on your unique, local issues and resources, to help develop your own emergency plans.

The most effective way to receive information that I have found is the Alert service that many EOCs provide. Once you subscribe on your local EOC website, you will receive text messages and emails alerts whenever there is any sort of emergency in your area. This happens in real time and from the source, so no waiting for media to make the report.

This is useful beyond a hurricane event, but for tornadoes to wild fires as well.

Here is the link to Indian River County's EOC (the Alert subscription button is along the right side, towards the top):

http://www.irces.com/em/index.htm

If you don't live in Indian River county, than do an internet search for "(Insert Your County) Emergency Operation Center". That should take you to the EOC webpage. If you don't see such a service, give them a call and find out how to get these important alerts.

I have never met anyone in an EOC that isn't thrilled to help out someone looking to prepare for a major emergency.

Get Prepared! Stay Safe!

To build off my last post:

“If we can make access to space low-cost, then entrepreneurs will be unleashed,” Bezos said. “You will see creativity, you will see dynamism, you will see the same thing in space that I’ve witnessed on the internet in the last 20 years.”
"Blue Origin team believe that New Shepard, which is expected to fly many times, will give the company ample practice and experience that can be applied to New Glenn, which will be manufactured and launched in Florida. (330 new jobs near Canaveral.)"
That's from Jeff Bezos' announcement of his intention of getting into the space race. He's selling off $1 billion dollars of Amazon stock to make it happen. He is also throwing around the phrase "golden age of space exploration", predicting "millions" working and living in space.

People with vision and resource are dreaming big on our doorstep.

Knock, knock, Indian River county. It's the future calling.

Space, SpaceX and the Treasure Coast: It's Time to Shoot the Moon

Image result for spacex
SpaceX is launching a Falcon 9 rockets from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Sunday. The payload reported to be an Air Force NROL-76 satellite, which there is little is publicly known of its purpose as it is from the National Reconnaissance Office and information is mostly classified. This will be SpaceX's first flight dedicated to NRO's mission and hopes to show they are a viable alternative to future missions.

A little history, SpaceX threatened to sue the Air Force in 2014 for unfair bidding practices, namely only awarding contracts to United Launch Alliance. The suit was dropped when NRO awarded Sunday's launch to SpaceX as a sole-source contract. This is seen as ultimately a huge win for the government (and, in turn, the US taxpayer), as now there are multiple sources to provide this service, hence, increasing competition. One thing to note, ULA has been resistant to this sort of competition, not only because of the threat it poses on the companies sole provider-ship, but also in the fact that SpaceX has been able to provide service at a much lower cost.

This lower cost is undoubtedly enabled by the remarkable success of SpaceX's reusable rockets. That is a great achievement for Elon Musk's company, but the goal he announce at the end of March was really interesting.

Reflight of reusable rockets, not only with commercial payloads, but government contracts! If Mr. Musk is able to achieve this goal, and with his track record so far, I am not sure I would doubt he can't, we could see the ushering in of a new age of space flight. It could be a renaissance of space activity on the east coast Florida that is reminiscent back to the days of the Apollo or shuttle missions.

Anyone that grew up during those times and lived on the east coast of Florida remembers how exciting and amazing it was to be living so close to the action. Launches arching over head on a regular basis carrying space travelers to new, far-flung destinations. The space shuttle riding "piggy-back" along the coast back to Canaveral. It was an inspiring time for future scientists, astronauts and technology enthusiasts.

What would it look like if the space program came back to life in our backyard? Would and could the Treasure coast be more than a spectator?

The world is a markedly different place then in the 1960's or 80's. The infrastructure has improved, as well as the technology. Commuting to and from Canaveral has become a much easier, comfortable and quicker trip from Indian River county. This is only going to improve as automated vehicles become more prevalent, as well as, electric cars reducing the energy burden of such a commute.

Our world is more connected with high speed internet, streaming video conferencing creating virtual offices, and global interactions happening from our phones. WiFi is allowing us to be mobile and continue to effective and efficient. This is evident in the growing number of people working from their homes.

It is good to remember that areas who lead in certain technologies attract similar industry. Orlando is a perfect example. Everyone is most likely familiar with the jaw-dropping virtual reality simulation displays and rides at the large amusement parks. What you may not know is Orlando is also a major hub for other industries that are interested in using that cutting edge technology developed in many parks. So, one industry is not only drawing in expertise for their own desires, but that same expertise is staying in the area and expanding into other fields.

https://media.glassdoor.com/l/fe/1e/cf/d4/lockheed-martin-employees-volunteering-at-fort-worth-museum-of-science-and.jpgThe $5 billion dollar success of the modeling, simulation and training (MS&T) technology industry branching from entrainment into defense contracting, commercial training and education in Orlando is something to examine for the potential of what could happen on the Treasure Coast. Not only growing the rocket vehicular technology and support fields, but nurturing the expansion by enticing other industries which may find the locality to the expertise desirable is the key to creating a new economic boom. This can only be done if the environment and community is receptive and ready to meet the needs of this new population.

Investments in communications should be the first goal. A plan for stable, fast internet capable of handling vast amounts of data needs to be instituted early. WiFi needs to be county wide, or at least to cover the more populated and potential growing residential areas. The system need to be adequately sustainable to increase resiliency and reducing recovery times after the inevitable major storms that are common in the area. This is the technology that is commerce's and the community's lifeline, it needs to be treated as such.

Alternative forms of transportation for commuting need to be explored. The days of the manually driven bus and vehicle are quickly coming to an end. This is the time to be forward thinking on this issue. Looking at available technology, working with transportation experts, and developing cutting edge methods, that reduce traffic, emissions and stress, to move people to and from the Treasure Coast will entice the best and the brightest. Not only will these individuals at the top of their field desire to relocate to an area with forward thinking initiatives that meet their travel needs, but they will be enticed to bring their families to a new, safer, cleaner community to raise their children. A place where fatalities caused by vehicular accidents could be cut by 90%.

https://fergusonfoundation.org/affnews_archives/graphics/dec09_solarcattle.jpgOur aging agricultural industry needs to be approached and new, bold ideas should be set in place. Multiple-use zoning, such as seen in urban development, could be used in the rural lands. Cattle fields that surround the county should be allowed to include vast solar farms. This dual use benefits the farmer, utility and local government by reducing tax burden for the land owner and utility, but increasing the tax revenue for the government through dual use. The real winner is the community by reducing energy costs and saving the individual money. In return, the extra savings gets spent back into the community. The combination of living in a county leading the state, if not the country, in solar ingenuity and benefits of reduced consumption costs will undoubtedly be an appealing draw for anyone.

Before anyone starts to raise a nose at the possibility of "ruining" the character of our county, I ask you to visualize what I am proposing before dismissing it. Nothing in these initiatives needs to be intrusive. With proper planning, legislation, and vision it can all be accomplished with very little negative impact to the appearance and quality of the community. Communication improvements can, and should be, invisible. Automated vehicles only replace those already on the road, and reduce the increasingly burdensome traffic congestion. Solar farms are placed away from the populated areas and can be screened with native vegetation for anyone living close to the field.

These initiatives, with correct planning and advertisement, can not only attract a growing population of new professionals with their families, but summarily increase the quality of life for the current residents and increase tax revenues for the local government. Everyone would benefit from forward thinking, reaching out to industry, conducting proper planning and investing wisely.

As companies at Kennedy Space Center are looking towards the heavens, dreaming and achieving impossible goals, we, as a community, should be doing the same. Not letting ourselves be stuck in self-limiting mindsets, but dreaming big and acting bold!

The question at hand is not "if this is going to happen"? It is happening, SpaceX, ULA, NASA and others are already reaching towards the stars. The question for us is, are we going to, once again, remain on the beach watching this amazing period of history unfold at our doorstep or are we going to be an active participant in its success, by having the vision and courage to seize this opportunity, lifting the quality of life and future for the entire community to new and wondrous heights?

Record Amount of Bomb Threats At Jewish Centers

The sudden surge in bomb threats against Jewish Community Centers across the country is in the high 60s. This has been occurring since January, less than two months. This is unimaginable. This is terrorism. This is being committed by people that are empowered by the Trump administration.

Sen. Rubio Avoids Town Halls

Senator Marco Rubio joins the group that refuses to meet with constituents in a public setting. He cites that due to the antics of "activists" it would not be productive. He doesn't want to be a crowd that would "heckle and scream" at him.

These cowardly acts of avoidance are unacceptable in our democracy. These people are hired to represent us. It is possible that the "activists" he is worried about are "real people" with real concerns. That they are mad and don't want to see their representatives or country follow this path.

Here is the letter I sent to Sen. Rubio:

Sen. Rubio,
I am retired, disabled military service member with over twenty years of distinguished service. I am an Iraqi veteran. I was a Federal law enforcement officer protecting this country from drug smugglers, illegal immigrants and wildlife poachers. I was a first responder during nearly every major hurricane that has hit Florida in the last two decades.

If you would hold a town meeting, I would be there. I would tell you how upset I am about your lack of support for issues that affect me and those in my community. Twenty million people will go without insurance if the ACA is not replaced immediately, most of those people are in Florida. Trust for the government is at an historical low and this administration has the worst record for transparency, but you continue to not hold anyone accountable. Your absentee record at Senate votes is unacceptable. In short, I would be very upset about the many issues where you seem to ignore the public interest.

Does this make me an activist? I don't think so. It makes me a concerned citizen of the state of Florida and our great country. It makes me a patriot, American and responsible citizen. Your decision to hide from your constituents is a cowardly move to avoid our voices. A characteristic that is becoming too normal and regularly occurring with this new administration. Do not follow their path of avoidance and fear. Step out and hear the will of the people, for better or worse, and be ready to perform your duties as a public servant.

If you find the courage to step out and meet with us, your voters you are charged with serving, I will promise to do everything that is in my power to allow you time to speak. I have faith others will stand beside me to do the same. What I can not promise is you will meet a crowd of adoring fans, but rest assured everyone will be concerned about the future of our country. I am, above everything else, one voter. If that means anything to you, I look forward to your appearance.
______________________

I don't think this will change anything in his mind. I believe he has his eyes set on 2020. He won't break ranks now, but its important to let them know that they are failing us. We are not just activists. We are many hard working, hopeful individuals that are placing faith in Rubio, Nelson and all the elected representatives.

We deserve to be heard, whether it is bad or good, and representatives should be held to the requirement of listening.

Empathy in the Political Spectrum

No automatic alt text available.

I've heard and read this sentiment more than once in the last few weeks. The idea that somehow the Obama era is relate-able to those of different political ideas with the actions of the current administration.

I understand the consternation many had during Obama's presidency. It's a typical reaction to a Commander-in-Chief of a different party. What I don't understand is how the Republican leaning voter can compare the blatant ethical and potentially un-Constitutional acts committed by Trump is anywhere close to what Obama did, especially in the first month, in his terms?

How do we convince those that still want to see this as "right vs. left" issue, when many of us feel this is very much an impending Constitutional crisis? I wish I could say this is Democrats crying foul for no real reason, but look at the building resistance coming from the traditional right.

McCain lamented about the suppression of the free press and its relation with dictators, tentatively linking Trump although not committing. "They get started by suppressing free press," McCain continued. "In other words, a consolidation of power. When you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press. And I'm not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I'm just saying we need to learn the lessons of history."

Graham demands a stronger approach to Russia, “When it comes to Russia, the one thing that bothers me most about President Trump is he never seems to forcefully embrace idea that Russia’s interference in our election in 2016 is something that should be punished. I am a Republican, it happened to the Democrats. it could happen to Republicans next."

As voices rise from both sides of the aisle, what would help in communicating the very real concern that our country and its values are being changed by the administration? Trump ignores basic rules (both written and expected) of ethics. He has been proven to be making enormous amounts of wealth due to his position as President. He apparently is not concerned with the weight and responsibility of his military decisions, as seen in the recent raid that lost one decorated service member. He demonstrates a certain mental instability, he demands respect, but gives little to those with different views, he ignores facts when they differ from his intentions, he routinely dodges blame, he's vindictive and petty to a fault, he seems to favor revenge over common decency.

What can be said to explain why there is a reason to worry over the actions of the Trump administration that go beyond the political spectrum?
